If you see different popular cartoon characters from the animated world taking over your Facebook homepage lately, there is no need to wonder why. Similar to the previous celebrity doppelganger craze, this time the users of this gigantic social networking site are changing their profile pictures, which is suppose to be their recognizable picture, with images from their childhood of the cartoon characters they liked the most.
The trend-tracking website, Know Your Meme, stated that this trend of changing your display picture to a cartoon character was originated by the Facebook users in Greece and Cyprus in mid-November. The trend-tracking website claims that the first original message which was spread in Greek, which if translated, meant: "From the 16th to the 20th of November, we shall change our profile pictures to our favorite cartoon characters. The purpose of this game is to remove all photos of human for a few days from Facebook." The message was spread so quickly and was adopted on such a large scale that it did not remain a Greek message anymore.
Soon another version of the message began to catch fire, this time it said: "NewGame: Change your profile picture to your favorite cartoon from when you were a kid. The goal of this game is not to see a human picture on Facebook, but an invasion of childhood memories until Monday. PLAY AND PASS ALONG!"
And soon until around 19th of November, AllFacebook.com disclosed that again another slightly different cartoon message started to sweep across Facebook this time. Now the message being posted from almost every other user, this time integrated a noble cause in the call to action. Finally, last trend of the wave said: "Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday, Dec 6th of 2010, there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories! This is for a campaign against violence on children."
Regardless of what the message is used to spread the new trend, that isn't stopping Facebook users from joining the online movement. However, this move is lately emerging more and more into a cause to stop violence against children.
