Facebook Announces Their Trends in Status Updates for 2010

Right after Twitter, which just released its 2010 trends as recently as yesterday, Facebook has now announced their top 10 trends among status updates of their huge number of users this year. Interestingly as almost half of these trends did actually matched, in one way or the other, with Twitter trends, there is mostly huge blabbing about huge world events like the World Cup and the Haiti earthquake or technology like the iPhone 4 and movies like Inception. However, there are also very few interesting deviations from the expected trend as well, intriguingly most noticeable amongst them was the acronym and a popular song.

The highest trending word for the status updates in the entire year was HMU, which stands for “hit me up.” Facebook users themselves made up the acronym which implies encouraging the family and friends to get in touch with them to hang out or spend time together. The acronym crept swirling throughout the entire time last year, hence bouncing the almost 1,600 mentions per day from the end of 2009 to an 80,000 and over per day till the end of the summer. And once after the school year had started, there was nothing stopping the mentions of HMU every weekend.
Surprisingly, the only ‘out of trend’ thing we were talking about was the word “airplane” which made a firm place on the list. This is almost entirely owing to the popular song “Airplanes” by the artist B.o.B featuring Hayley James. And quite predictably, the mentions of 2011 were also at a high rate during the time of 2010. Although it was still a little surprisingly, to notice that the mentions of 2011 peaked on Jan. 1, 2010. And of course, last but not the least, How could the list have finished without Justin Bieber?! The 15 year-old singing sensations is all the rage. Bieber fever, “Baby.”
