Now Your Stream Of Tweets Will Include Ads From Others –Twitter.

In the pursuit of making more and more profit, this time Twitter is planning to roll out in-stream advertising slowly, with phased implementation. Apparently, it will remain a work in progress. Twitter Inc, has already begun testing Promoted Tweets technique with one of its partners, HootSuite. Such experiments of Twitter are meant for better understanding regarding how and when to place the ads, hopefully aimed to be as unobtrusive to the microblogging company’s loyal users.

Just as the Promoted Tweets aren’t exactly selected in a very random manner, the key there is relevance; Twitter believes it is much more potentially useful to make sure that the ads you see in your stream are aimed directly at you. Means the audience will be targeted efficiently.

Twitter, itself has mentioned in its post announcing the roll out in these words, “During this testing period with HootSuite, we will experiment with where and when Promoted Tweets are shown in the timeline. Not all HootSuite users will see Promoted Tweets and those who do may see different Promoted Tweets in different places in their timeline. As with Promoted Tweets in search, we will display Promoted Tweets in the timeline when they are relevant. Similar to our Promoted Account recommendations, we use several signals to determine a Promoted Tweet’s relevance to a user, including the public list of whom they follow. We will expand the rollout only when we feel we’re delivering a high-quality user experience.”

The response to this new idea of ‘in-stream advertisements’ can’t really be predicted, in fact most believe to have a very mixed and varied response considering the large audience.

Quite expectedly Twitterati was rather displeased with seeing their stream, as they say, “polluted” with ads, but at the same time, there is also an understandable agreement that Twitter can’t continue forever without generating more revenue.

Rumor has it; Virgin, Starbucks and Red Bull are some of the expected companies which will play partners in Twitter’s this in-stream advertising. Similar companies were also the part of previous Promoted Tweet campaigns which are currently being run on Twitter. Not to mention that only last month, Twitter was selling Promoted Tweets for upwards of $100,000. It’s again unpredictable, what advertisers may be willing to pay for such in-stream ads.
