Facebook Places Gets A Heads Up Even Before Launch

Although it is published today, the research occurred from between August 9 till September 13, of this year. Facebook Places was announced on August 18.
Places lets you share where you are with your friends and see who's nearby. Now with Deals, you also can see what offers are nearby and share those deals with your friends.

An analytical website, The Pew Internet Project, submitted a report on regarding geosocial services released today. It was second of it kind, first Pew Internet Project’s survey, was conducted in May. It stated that the use of the location services, such as Foursquare and Gowalla, has dropped by a percentage, from five percent to four percent. The further added the hypothesis, saying that the drop had much to do with the timing of the Facebook Places announcement on August 18.

Another potential comparison for Facebook Places is Pew’s statistic on use of mobile location based services:
·         7 percent of adults who go online with their mobile phone use a location-based service.
·         8% of online adults ages 18-29 use location-based services, significantly more than online adults in any other age group.
·         10% of online Hispanics use these services – significantly more than online whites (3%) or online blacks (5%).
·         6% of online men use a location-based service such as Foursquare or Gowalla, compared with 3% of online women.

Now, Pew’s next survey of this space will probably show what kind of growth trajectory Facebook Places and Deals have.
